Things I Find Weird About Washington

08 Sep

[New photos below…]

I thought I’d document some of the things I’ve been noticing since I’ve moved to Washington from Texas where I lived for more than 10 years before here. These range from the obvious to the very subtle and from the possibly interesting to “who really cares”. I just figure that if I don’t do this now as I’m seeing things for the first time, it will become normal before I realize it. So here we go:

  • The area of the Washington I moved to happens to be ranked 10th as LEAST affordable housing market in the United States.
  • The onramps to the freeways not only have metering (red light/green light) but also have Car Pool lanes which bypass directly to the highway.
  • Home made signs posted for Garage Sales very regularly simply say “G Sale” with the address or directional arrow.
  • The townhouse grass and flower beds where are temporarily living are watered daily rain or shine.
  • There are many more lakes and rivers within 15 minutes drive than I had imagined.
  • Wal-Marts are far and few between.
  • Costcos are plentiful nearby.
  • On a sunny weekend, you’ll see ski boats, sail boats, kayaks and swimmers on Lake Washington. You won’t see jet skis.
  • A large percentage of homes have stairs due to all the sloping hills/mountains.
  • People do not wave back to strangers when walking by or driving by waving.
  • There’s a road between each town which is called by the two connecting towns’ names. E.g. Bothell Everett Hwy, Woodinville Duvall Rd., etc.
  • Most homes do not have air conditioning.
  • Dogs go everywhere – beach, hardware store, grocery store, work, etc.
  • There are Toyota Prius Hybrids everywhere. Incidentally, I have seen three different Ferrari’s within the same 10 mile radius in the last four week (two in one day).
  • There are lots of indian and non-indian casinos nearby. Not just the resort style, several are in strip malls.
  • No place to watch the UFC pay per view fight – that allows kids.
  • Downtown Seattle is a bust on a Monday night.

Update 091608:

  • Blackberries grow extremely well here and can be found virtually everywhere. They are in fact considered to be nuisance weeds!

I’m sure there will be more added to this list as time goes on. Meanwhile, here’s some recent photos.
