A Day at the Museum of Glass

Today, Brandon and I visited the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA. It was a great trip for the two of us to spend some very rare and needed one-on-one time together. We talked about a wide variety of topics during our one hour drive to the museum. Brandon set our agenda essentially and we did the things he wanted to do and skipped the items he’d prefer to do without. It worked out pretty well.

Surprisingly, we spent four hours at the Museum of Glass which showcases fine art of all glass types (contemporary, abstract, figurines, etc.) I had know idea what to expect before we arrived. The museum did a very good job of combining hands-on kids’ interactive activities to exhibits that suit all kinds of tastes and even an interesting lecture (we left fairly quick – remember, Brandon’s agenda.) The exhibits meander from within the core of the building to outside with reflecting pools to across the pedestrian bridge which goes over the highway. At the center of this building was a Hot Shop. In this area, we watched glass artists transforming things from non-descript “blobs” of glass to amazing glass, vases, etc. completed forms.

Once we returned home and joined the rest of the family, Brandon suggested that we rate the day on a scale from 1 to 10 for the amount of fun we had. He asked me to go first; I said it was a solid 9. He announced to everyone else that he’d give it an ELEVEN! What a great thing to hear from your child – that you hit a home run by his scorecard. We had such a great time on this trip. We’re both looking forward to having another “Big Boys” trip in the near future!
